Inspiration: Small Space Design

Freshman year in college I moved away from home and into a tiny dorm room.  It was the first time in my life that I had to fit a bedroom, kitchen, living room and dining room all into a space no larger than 5 feet by 11 feet.  As an interior design major, this was an opportunity for me to get creative.  I quickly learned that the best approach to this design problem was to “build up.”  There was only one shelf in the closet, so I added an additional shelf above it for more storage.  When you’re limited in square footage it’s important to carefully design each space to optimize functionality.  I’m amazed how many laundry rooms or copy rooms are not utilizing all the available wall space.  Consider “building up” by adding taller cabinets in these spaces.  Even though the top shelf might not be very accessible, there will always be a need to store items that may only be used once a year – and once a year it’s ok to bring out the step stool.
